As the weather turns chilly and crisp, a lot of homeowners find themselves in one of two positions: Thankful for their well-insulated home or frustrated with drafty rooms and high energy bills.

Which one are you?

Homeowners often wonder if they have the right kind of insulation to keep their homes cold in the summer and warm in the winter.

This is especially true if you have an older home that may use outdated insulation methods. Luckily, you can improve your home’s energy efficiency and increase your equity by replacing your insulation with spray foam insulation. But what is spray foam insulation? And is it really any better than other insulation methods out there?

What is spray foam insulation?

Spray foam insulation is a spray-applied plastic made of polyol resin and a type of isocyanate. It’s used to insulate homes and buildings as well as seal up any cracks or gaps that might cause unwanted drafts. It’s incredibly effective at maintaining stable temperatures both in the height of summer and the darkest days of winter.

What are some other types of insulation?

Other insulation types you may find in your building or home include fiberglass, foam board and cellulose. The price and availability of these materials vary depending on your location, potential damage to exterior walls, and if they can fit into your space (i.e., crawl spaces or attics.)

Is spray foam better than other insulation methods?

While other kinds of insulation will certainly help keep your home warm or cold depending on the season, very few are able to cover as much ground as spray foam. This is because spray foam can get into small spaces that would otherwise be difficult to reach with traditional insulation.

How does spray foam work?

When the polyol resin and isocyanate are combined, they go through a chemical reaction that creates a foam, causing it to expand up to 60 times its original volume. The foam is incredibly effective since it fills the space it’s applied to, and it minimizes heat transfer as well as reducing the airflow from outside.

Can you apply spray foam yourself?

Technically, you could apply spray foam yourself. However, the application process is complicated, and making a mistake could result in an expensive setback. It’s best to work with professionals to take down your drywall, remove any existing insulation and then safely apply the spray foam insulation.
